3 Cedar Roofing Installation Mistakes That You Should Avoid

Having a cedar roof is a great way to make your home stand out from a sea of asphalt shingles roofs. It gives your home a natural look that adds a unique charm, not to mention boost your home’s curb appeal and value. It is a wise investment that can last you a very, very long time if installed and taken care of properly. If you’ve been thinking about installing a new cedar roof, here are three common mistakes that you absolutely need to avoid according to a trusted roofing and siding contractor.

1. Skipping a Starter Strip

In their rush to complete your project and move on to the next one, some roofing contractors will completely skip installing a starter strip along the edge of your roof. This is a big no-no. A starter strip ensures proper installation and alignment of your shingles. While it takes time to do properly, it is definitely worth the effort if you want your shingles to be trimmed to the correct exposure length.

2. Choosing the Wrong Underlay

As great as cedar shingles are at protecting against the elements, they are not completely waterproof. Just as with any type of roofing system, you need to install the correct type of underlay that is suitable for your cedar shingles. Your roofing services provider should select an underlay that is compatible with the pitch and thickness of your roof.

3. Not Using Enough Nails

Your geographic location will determine the correct number of nails that should be used when fixing your cedar shingles in place. If you live in a windy region, not using the recommended amount of nails can cause your shingles to get blown off from your roof completely.
