4 Questions to Ask a Prospective Contractor

Hiring a contractor for your residential remodel can be a nerve wrecking process.  Who you hire can make a big difference in how smoothly your project runs.  It can also be a differentiator in both the cost of the project and the quality of the end-product.  When interviewing prospective contracting partners, ask these essential questions to ensure you find the right professional for your needs.

1. What services do you provide?

You want to make sure any contractor you hire has the skill set to complete the work at your home.  Be clear on what tasks you need completed.  If they are unable to do each one, you will need to hire a separate contractor for the work.  You should also inquire on whether they have any specialties.  For example, some contractors such as Custom Installations specialize in historic restorations.

2. How long have you worked in this area?

When possible, always choose a contractor with a long-standing history in your community. This helps you avoid fly-by-the-night contractors.  These contractors travel between storm-damaged towns looking for quick money.  They often are not licensed and leave only shoddy work and uncompleted jobs behind.

3. Do you provide a free estimate?  If so, what does the estimate include?

The quality of the estimate sets the foundation for how smoothly a project runs.  A reputable contractor will typically offer free bids or estimates for a project.  Always make sure you are clear on whether the quote is a firm price or an estimate.  Also inquire on whether they itemize on the bid.  A bid that takes too long to complete or one that is not communicated well can be a sign of things to come.

4. Do you have experience working with insurance companies?

If your repair is related to damage from a storm or fire, the ability for a potential contractor to work with your insurance company is important.  Make sure that any contractor you hire has experience working with insurance companies.  This will not only help get your project done more quickly but also keep you out of the middle of discussions between the contractor and your insurance company.
