Aluminum Siding Pros and Cons

Like roofing services, choosing a material for your home siding need not be difficult. Although there are a variety of choices available in the market, not all of them are the same. In this post, we will talk about aluminum siding. Is aluminum siding the right choice for your home? Let’s find out.

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum was a pretty popular siding material choice from the time it was introduced in 1940 until the 1970s. It offered a host of benefits many homeowners wanted, but eventually it was replaced by other cladding materials. It is still commonly available today, and offers the same benefits that it did years ago.

Pros

  • Tough and lightweight

Aluminum is a durable type of siding that doesn’t weigh much. Don’t be fooled by its light weight, however. If properly maintained, aluminum siding can be like metal roofing: able to protect your home from bad weather for up to 40 years.

  • Waterproof and rust-resistant

Aluminum siding is waterproof. Properly installed, it gives your home excellent water-resistance and helps to protect it from heavy downpours. It is also a good choice of siding for homes near the beach as it does not rust and is capable of withstanding salty seaside air.

  • Fireproof

Aluminum siding is fireproof. It  won’t burn or melt when exposed to fires. It can also help prevent the spread of fires, especially in areas prone to wildfires.

  • Insect-resistant

Unlike other siding materials, aluminum siding is not organic and does not attract insects and other animals.

Cons

  • Easily dents

Aluminum siding dents fairly easily. Hail and projectiles blown around by strong winds can dent aluminum siding and make them look less attractive than when first installed.

  • Scratches easily and needs frequent repainting

Aluminum siding gets scratched fairly easily. And although colors and patterns can be baked onto the siding, the colors can fade over time, requiring painting at least every five to 10 years.

  • Makes loud noise

Rain and hail, as well as strong winds and windblown projectiles cause aluminum siding, like metal roofing, to produce some level of noise.
