Water-Shedding and Water-Resistant Roofs – An Overview

The roof is designed to act as a shield to the harsh elements, with rain being one of the most well-known threats to the home. To protect your home from rain, the roof has to be a water-shedding roof or a water-resistant one. How are these two types of roofs different from each other? As the leading expert in roofing services, we’re here to give you a quick overview of both roofs.

Water-Shedding Roof

A water-shedding roof is a roof specially designed to direct the water to the gutter as efficiently as possible. Most water-shedding roofs tend to have steeper inclines and feature surfaces that are either smooth or have grooves that act as channels to facilitate faster water flow.

Water-Resistant Roof

A water-resistant roof is a type of roof that does a great job at resisting the effects of being exposed to moisture. According to the leading roofing and siding contractor in the area, low-slope roofs have to be water-resistant because rainwater doesn’t flow into the gutters as fast as water-shedding roofs. If a water-shedding roof does a great job of directing water flow, a water-resistant roof does a better job at keeping it from penetrating the roof surface.

Which Is Better?

There are some instances where one type of roof works better than the other. In areas that receive plenty of strong rains, a water-shedding roof does a better job of avoiding problems such as pooling. On the other hand, homes in areas with frequent but weaker rains won’t benefit much from better water-shedding but can use the extra resistance against prolonged exposure to water.

Professional Installation Required

Both water-shedding and water-resistant roofing have to be installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications if you want them to function as efficiently as possible. This is why we recommend having them installed exclusively by certified local experts whether they are asphalt shingle, clay, or metal roofing. This also helps protect your home from costly installation mistakes because professionally-installed roofs are covered by product or service warranties.
